Conveyor Idlers for Mt. Newman Project

Conveyor idlers are normally used as components on powered belt conveyors or trough conveyor systems
for moving bulk materials, although there can be exceptions........

Tekforce were recently involved with the unique supply of conveyor idlers and trough frames for an
infrastructure project located in Mt. Newman, Western Australia.

Conveyor-idlers were used as a static roller system spaced intermittently along the ground to manually
conveyor 700mm diameter PVC piping which was utilised for town water.

The conveyor idlers allowed the piping to remain clear from the ground to prevent damaged and also to
reduce the manual handling risk during installation.

Vibrating feeders increase bulk handling productivity

Vibrating feeders and Vibrating Screens are designed to increase bulk handling productivity for transferring
a broad range of bulk materials.

Vibrating screens and feeders provide high feeding rates for free flowing bulk materials for mining,
aggregates, coal, glass cullet, chemical, grains and cereals to name a few.

Vibratory feeders are extremely reliable units and are designed with minimal moving components which
minimise maintenance frequencies and parts inventories.

Feeders are ideal for restrictive locations or processes with small footprints and can be adapted to storage
bins, hoppers, silos, storage piles, conveyors and industrial processes for both Light and Heavy industries.

Powered Roller Conveyor Revamp @ Boral

Tekforce are pleased to announce the successful bid for the refurbishment of an existing powered roller
conveyor at the Boral concrete manufacturing plant based in Vic.

The Boral contract involves decommission a powered roller conveyor system which is passed its service
life and revamping with a new heavy-duty roller assembly. The scope includes design enhancements to
rectify worn conveyor components, structural faults and outdated safety features.

On completion of the project, Boral expect to benefit from improved production output attained from
greater system uptime, a reduction in maintenance cost and OH&S enhancements.

Transitional Conveyor Idlers - Applications for Bulk Conveyors

Transitional idler frames and Trippable frames are components commonly used on bulk conveyors and trough conveyor systems, positioned at the terminal area. Transitional idler frames are usually mounted between the terminal pulley and the first fully troughed conveyor idler at the load or impact zone to achieve gradual transition from the flat conveyor belt to the fully troughed angle.

Transitional idlers assist with supporting the belt and the sealing arrangement within the transfer area and normally include one or several frames dependent on the length of the transfer zone.

Trippable and transitional frames can be custom manufactured to a specific troughing angle or adjustable to allow interchangeability for multiple positions and can be supplied for uni-directional or reversible conveyor belts.

Belt Feeder and Transfer Conveyors

Belt feeder conveyors and transfer conveyors for screening, crushing or minerals processing plants are the ideal solution when bulk materials are required to transfer a relatively short distance between hopper load areas and secondary processing machinery such as rock crushers.

When bulk materials only need to transfer uni directional over short distances ranging between 0.3 and 4.5 metres in length, in many instances the cost-effective and low-maintenance solution would be to utilise a vibratory feeder. In the event when the load needs to transfer longer distances beyond the vibratory capabilities, such as 5-10 metres, then belt feed conveyors are generally introduced.

Belt feeder conveyors and transfer conveyors are typically designed with wide belt widths, low belt speeds and of robust construction for heavy loads, while the belt conveyor idlers need to carry the load in a wide, thin layer and commonly utilise troughed picking and feeder idlers or retractable roller idlers.

Scavenger Conveyors - Applications for Bulk Systems

Scavenger conveyors, also known as 'Scrapings-conveyors' or 'Tailings-conveyors' are used on bulk
conveying systems to reclaim material spillage at the discharge or transfer point on trough belt conveyors.

Scavenger-conveyors are normally mounted beneath the conveyor discharge or head pulley to reclaim
tailings collected from secondary belt cleaners. The purpose of scavenger conveyors is to return the
tailings back into the primary discharge chute or hopper to prevent spillage, contamination and wastage in
unwanted areas of the conveying system.

In confined areas or for conveying difficult material compositions, Vibratory tailings-conveyors and Bin
vibrators can provide a beneficial solution to release tailings build up, compared to contemporary belt
conveyor designs.

Total Indicator Runout 'TIR' - Conveyor Idlers

Total Indicator Runout 'TIR' in reference to conveyor idlers for bulk conveyor systems, measures the
concentricity or 'circular runout' of the outside diameter of the idler tube in relation to its common axis of
the associated shaft and bearing assembly.

'TIR' is normally measured as a static/dynamic value on each end of the tube and also on the centre of the
idler tube. Measurement of the TIR is typically undertaken with a dial indicator on the tube circumference
with a typical reference value between 0.21mm (0.008 in) and 0.32mm (0.013 in), although varies between
vendors.

Total Indicator Runout can be exacerbated during the idler manufacture from stresses attained during the
welding process while attaching the tube and end discs. This circular runout can be minimised by utilising
interference-fit pressed ends (heads) rather than welded end disc assemblies.

TIR plays a critical function for the idler/bearing longevity especially on high-speed bulk conveyors,
mining or overland conveyor systems where the build-up of excess heat can shorten the L10 bearing life.

Retractable Idlers - OH&S Benefits

Conveyor idler rollers for wide or high capacity trough belt conveyors can be extremely heavy and present
an OH&S manual handling risk when installing idler frames or performing maintenance retrofits. One
strategy to reduce the idler weight is to implement retractable idler frames which generally incorporates
multiple idler rolls rather than one individual roller. Retractable frames also enable idler rolls to be easily
accessible especially when utilised in conveyor load sections and transfer points beneath hoppers and
skirts. By incorporating retractable frames as part of the conveyor design, we can reduce the individual
idler weight by at least half.

Bin Vibrators and Hoppers

Bin vibrators are an important part of material flow in hoppers and are necessary to prevent blockages due
to friction between the bin liner and material.

Never operate bin vibrators while the hopper flow gates are closed as material packing is inevitable.
Furthermore, bin vibrators should not be operated when hopper is empty as excessive noise and hopper
fatigue is possible.
